Solidarity Statement in Response to the Murder of George Floyd

Dear CNLD Familia and Allies,
As an organization dedicated to disability justice and to embracing all of the intersecting identities of our disabled Latinx community, we cannot stand idly by while our Black brothers, sisters and nonbinary individuals are being murdered by police officers. We are sincerely devastated and outraged, and recognize that our liberation is deeply bound to that of the Black community. Therefore, we mourn and stand in solidarity with the Black community at this moment. The recent murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police officers and Ahmaud Arbery by White civilians, coupled with the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black, Latinx, Native, and disability communities, reminds us that we must work together to fight the institutionalized racism and ableism that continues to torment our peoples.
CNLD affirms that Black lives matter. We are committed to stand with and alongside the Black community to demand justice, the accountability of law enforcement, and the end of state sanctioned violence. We strongly support our AfroLatinx community members, and we are determined to acknowledge, address, and end the colorism and anti-Blackness sentiment that exists within our own Latinx community through conversations that unpack our history of colorism and internalized racism.
As we go forward, CNLD is conscientious that, to move forward as a unified nation, we must invest in the well-being of humanity as a whole. The institutional racism that America refuses to acknowledge is deeply rooted, systemic, and very complex. Consequently, the solution is not simple and will not be solved in a matter of days, weeks, or months. In recognition of our intersectional interconnectedness, we believe that the solution lies in each one of us.

Thus, we at CNLD would like to hear your thoughts and opinions. We want to have a conversation about what we can do and to start working toward healing. This will obviously look different for each and everyone of us. We ask that you please provide us with your opinion to guide us in developing a plan for greater cross-movement solidarity and a national conversation about race and racism in the United States.

Thank you!

Yours in the Struggle,
Executive Board of CNLD
We imagine a society in which the human rights of Latinxs with disabilities are upheld and all their intersecting identities are embraced.
